Sometimes our clients feel they have lost their way with a room, if they have moved house often items that worked well in their old house no longer fit the new space they are in. Pieces of furniture will be mixed, existing curtains and floors will be kept, meaning the room becomes disjointed and looks unfinished.
Rather than tell them to get rid of everything I will always try to work with what they have, sometimes a few small changes can make a big difference and create a look with more cohesion. This customer knew they weren’t happy with how they’re living room looked, but couldn’t quite figure out what to do with it, so they asked me for some help.
I felt a lot of it was because there were only quite neutral colours in the room, there was no real contrast. Neutrals can work really well when there is tone that is used throughout, and when textures are used, but the footstool was more purple than brown, which for me threw the whole thing off. The rug didn’t work with anything and felt messy, and the oak floor and fireplace had been forgotten.
We only changed the rug, the cushions and reupholstered the footstool, but made a dramatic change to the whole room. We chose a rich, royal blue for the footstool, this made it really stand out to create a feature, and then pulled the colour through on to the cushions, while also adding a pattern for some interest. We used cream on the back cushions which tied in with the existing curtains. The fabrics and rug all had touches of gold, which created warmth, incorporating the richness of the oak floor. Finally, we kept the rug simple so we had clean lines to frame the footstool.
